Dr. Flynn grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA until she moved to Washington, DC to attend college and medical school at The George Washington University. She completed a three-year pediatric residency, and then a three-year pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellowship. The first 11 years of her pediatric career were spent practicing in the pediatric emergency department.
After deciding to leave PEM for general practice, she and her husband and two young children moved to San Antonio in 2011. She has worked in some unique primary care settings, including two military bases and at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Family Residential Center caring for the children in a community environment where women and their children stayed until they were cleared to join their US families. This provided a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the hardships that these families faced and the atrocities in their own countries that drove them to seek asylum in the US. This experience was incredibly rewarding--the mothers were so grateful for the care and kindness that they and their children received, and it was heartwarming to witness the amazing resiliency of these children.
After taking an advanced course in pediatric mental health disorders with emphasis on the many different types of medications used to treat them, Dr. Flynn discovered the confidence and sense of pride that came from watching children and teens gradually improve from the distressing, and often disabling, symptoms of their mood disorders, ADHD, aggression, etc. Seeing the impact that this improvement had on not just the child/teen, but the entire family, strengthened her enthusiasm to continue helping other kids and teens with mental health conditions . After graduating from the GWU School of Medicine 28 years ago, Dr. Flynn can finally say that she has found her true passion in the practice of pediatrics!
